Hair Loss Q & A

What causes hair loss?

The most common cause of hair loss in men is androgenic alopecia. Other contributing factors to hair loss may include:

  • Hormonal imbalance (including thyroid dysfunction)
  • Severe stress
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Rapid weight loss
  • Certain medications
  • Underlying medical conditions

Because hair loss can sometimes signal a broader health issue, a proper evaluation matters.

When should I seek help for hair loss?

Early intervention produces the best results, so schedule an assessment if you notice:

  • A receding hairline or widening part
  • Increased shedding in the shower or on pillows
  • Thinning at the crown
  • Visible scalp through the hair
  • Sudden or accelerated hair loss

The earlier your treatment begins, the more you can preserve existing hair. Once follicles are permanently inactive, regrowth becomes far more difficult.

How is hair loss treated?

Treatment for androgenic alopecia focuses on reducing hair loss and stimulating growth. The most effective, evidence-based treatments include finasteride, minoxidil, and combination therapy.

Finasteride (oral or topical)

Finasteride works by blocking the enzyme that can stop hair growth. This reduces follicle miniaturization and helps preserve existing hair.

Oral finasteride is a daily medication that slows hair loss and promotes regrowth in many men. Topical finasteride delivers the medication directly to the scalp.

Finasteride is most effective at maintaining hair and preventing further loss. Some men also experience regrowth, particularly in the crown area.

Minoxidil (topical or oral)

Minoxidil improves blood flow to hair follicles and extends the growth phase of the hair cycle. Topical minoxidil (applied to the scalp) can stimulate thicker, longer hair growth over time.

In select cases, low-dose oral minoxidil may be considered under medical supervision. Minoxidil works best when used consistently and may take several months before you see visible improvement.

Combination therapy

For many men, the most effective approach is combining treatments.

What can I expect from hair loss treatment?

Hair restoration requires patience and consistency. Typically, improvement starts within 3-6 months, with continued gains over 12 months or longer. Quitting treatment usually results in a gradual return of hair loss, which is why ongoing management is essential.

Your personalized plan may also include:
